Without the breath their exists no practice of Yog. It was the philosophy and principles of Pranayama that insprired me fom an early age to take my Yoga practice further. I have studied Pranayama techniques extensively including British Wheel of Yoga and more recently Philip Xerri Pranayama Module (March 09-Jan 10.); a BWY module based on teachings of Dr Swami Gitananda.
I hold Pranayama and Mediation classes in my home and in class. Please email me sadhana@sadhanayoga.co.uk for more details
.I regularly attend a wide variety of workshops from anatomy to philosphy and dance in both Yoga and Pilates to keep my approach fresh and up-to-date and I am grateful to those teachers for sharing their knowledge. Some of these include 'Anatomy of Yoga', 'Safe Backbends', 'Making Inversions Safe and Enjoyable', 'Yoga and Meditation', 'Teaching Mindfulness', 'Yin/Yang Yoga' with Sarah Powers, 'Anatomy of the Hips', 'Principles of Kathak', 'Methods of Mantra', 'The Bhagavad Gita within the Mahabharata', weekly discussions groups on Bhagavad Gita/Vedanta/Islam and Yoga amongst many others. Many of these workshops are with accredited bodies.
The classes are made accessible for all people so that you can take the classes at your own pace and enjoy the practice. This approach can help us to reduce our ego as a 'goal' oriented pratice which often lead to anger and frustration. I encourage people to use their breath to enter into a state of dhyana and dharana (concentration and internal focus) which can lead us into a beautiful state of joy and peace in the internal bodies.
All my classes practice mindfulness of the breath and body. If you can breath then you can practice Yoga. All is ask is that you listen to YOUR body, be mindful and enjoy the pratice.
Just bring a warm heart and an open mind.
Ashtanga Yoga oftens gets confused with Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (a dynamic stronger postural Yoga). My own Yoga practice tries to follow the ethics and priciples of Ashtanga Yoga which is based on Patanjali system of Yoga Philosophy. Patanjali is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras (Texts) which part of the Darshanas (Hindu School of Philosophy) . The Sutras date between 200 BC and 200 AD. Patanjali's Ashtanga system is also known as Raja Yoga- Royal Yoga. The 'eight-fold' path gives us 'guidelines' on how to live a purposeful, joyous and meaningful life. A very brief outline is mentioned below:
Yin/Restorative Yoga is a beautiful form of Yoga which nourishes the internal organs using passive Yoga postures. Yin/Restorative Yoga encourages opening the body in a variety of quiet, seated postures using cushions and props. This meditative form of Yoga is extremely beneficial for people with injuries from tight hips to pulled hamstrings, and ideal for pregnant ladies or just for those of us who are looking to enjoy the stillness in life.
Yin Yoga is a great way to end the week, restoring all aspects of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual body and making peace with the soul.
"In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference, in thirty you will have a whole new body." - Joseph Pilates
Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th Century, Pilates referred to the exercise techniques as a method that encourages using the mind to control the body.
Pilates can be practised by all persons and using core postural muscles to help support the spine, allowing the body to become supple and strong in a safe and effective way.
I first came across Pilates after a shoulder injury. Pilates helped me to strengthen my shoulder and has made a huge difference in the way I use my muscles and re-align the body.
